GondwanaSound
Title: GondwanaSound
DJ(s): Jill
Description:
Gondwanasound - World Wide Music Adventures.
GondwanaSound came about through an enthusiasm for all types of music, especially music that I may not have heard before. It's this sense of inquisitiveness that makes the radio broadcast "an adventure in global roots and grooves".
As I have got older, I've changed my monkey boots for more comfortable footwear and concentrate on roots music from here and over there. However, I cannot guarantee that the odd bit of roots reggae or late 70s punk won't surface from time to time.
Join me each week, Wednesdays 6-8pm for music that you won't ordinarily hear on your radio. Rai music from Algeria, European Drone Music, Senegalese Hip Hop, West African Orisha music, Mongolian Overtone singing, Argentinian Tango, Batacumba, Gypsy swing, Balkan Brass, plus established favourites from labels such as Wrasse, World Circuit, Arc Music, RealWorld, Riverboat Records and World Music Network.
The broadcast usually starts with some new releases and we take a look at the European World Music charts as they are released each month. During the programme we'll bring you news and reviews.
Other regular features include:
* GondwanaSound at large
* AfriGondwana
* Selected Sheffielder
* Spaced Out
GondwanaSound at large, with its backstage pass and access all areas, brings you interviews with artists and musicians as they come to play in Sheffield or when we catch up with them on the festival circuit.
AfriGondwana is where we join up with DJ Andy Healey, from Africabeat every week around 6:45pm to talk us through some of the new releases and current hot picks from the mother continent.
Each month I have a Selected Sheffielder as my guest, usually someone who has a passion for roots music or a story to tell. We play their picks and have an informal chat about their lives and why they think Sheffield is the bees knees.
Also, listen out for the Spaced Out feature, where I scour the ever expanding world on line, to bring you some artists using the independent and democratic medium of MySpace or the internet to showcase their global roots and grooves.
Above all, enjoy the programme and please interact with the broadcast by emailing gondwanasound@gmail.com and joining the family at myspace.com/gondwanasound.
You can now listen again to past editions of Gondwanasound, with the new podcasts.
One love to the music makers.
One love to the peace makers.
